Types of Work

Clerical and office positions are most common but there are occasions where non-clerical positions, such as food service workers, movers, electricians, carpenters, etc. are available.

Assignment length varies depending on the needs of the department requesting temporary staff and can range from a few days to several months. Assignments can unexpectedly end, or be extended, and there is no limit to the duration. Similarly, some assignments allow for flexible work hours, while others have a fixed schedule.

Due to a variety of variables (your skills and experience, departmental needs, and number of available assignments), temp staff cannot be guaranteed steady, consistent, employment.

All new hires, rehires and transfers to new departments are subject to criminal background checks. Eligibility for employment is contingent on the background check results.

Temp-to-Hire

Our Temp-to-Hire program provides you the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge, skills, and abilities as an SOS temp, with the potential for regular employment. Notify the SOS Temporary Staffing office if you are interested in benefit-eligible employment so we can consider you for temp-to-hire positions. If you are selected for a regular position, a two-week notice is required. We also encourage SOS employees to continue applying for other positions.

Pay and Benefits

Temps are paid biweekly on Wednesdays. Pay rates vary depending on your skills and the duties of the job order. Most assignments pay between $14 to $16 per hour. If you fail to submit hours by the end of the pay period, your pay will be processed the following payroll period (two weeks later).

SOS Temps are classified as non-regular employees and are therefore non-benefit eligible. Non-regular employees do not qualify for accrual of paid time off for vacation and sick leave and there is no holiday pay, medical insurance, or educational assistance.

If you are a University employee in layoff status, layoff benefits remain intact while employed with SOS. However, you will continue to be responsible for your staff benefits contribution.

Training

SOS Temporary Staffing offers its employees the opportunity to develop their knowledge, skills, and abilities via Percipio and the Division of Information Technology. Active temps can refine their skills in widely used programs such as PeopleSoft Financials, PeopleSoft Human Resources, Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, and much more.

Request process

After receiving your request, a placement specialist will contact you to better understand your needs, timeline, and budget. Next, we search our talent pool for the most qualified candidate(s) to fit your needs.

SOS handles all the recruitment effort including application screening for your preferred qualifications, reference checks, background checks, and skills testing, at no additional charge. The selected temp will be paid through SOS Temporary Staffing based on the time approved by your department in our TEMPS System.

Temp-to-Hire

Conveniently hire benefit-eligible employees through our temp-to-hire program without going through the traditional requirements of posting a job! Your department quickly gets a temporary employee plus additional time for you to assess their compatibility and skills with your needs.

When you have found the right fit, you must give SOS a two-week notice. Your placement coordinator will assist you with the transfer process. All SOS candidates are subject to the transfer background check process.

Billing

Temps earn an hourly rate based on duties, skills, and experience, and your placement coordinator will work with you to determine an appropriate rate for your specific request.

SOS processes billing on a biweekly basis using the MOCode you provide. Charges appear in PeopleSoft under account 7080000 unless otherwise requested. The e-billed amount includes the standard hourly rate, appropriate taxes and fees, and service charge.

Time and approvals are logged in the SOS TEMPS System. Changes made in Time & Labor time sheets will appear the following morning at 6:30 a.m.  Please approve only the hours worked in your department by 10:00 a.m. each Monday.  If you are experiencing issues, contact the SOS Temporary Staffing team for assistance.
